SYTECH's story

SYTECH’s history is marked by innovation, adaptation, and a relentless commitment to quality. From our early days as Systems Technology Consultants to our current status as a leading digital forensics and consultancy provider, we have consistently met the challenges of technological advancements and market demands. Explore our history, where every milestone echoes our dedication to client success and corporate responsibility.

Early Beginnings

SYTECH's origins date back to 1978. Originally founded by Professor Frank Taylor, making us the longest-established digital forensics provider in the UK, Systems Technology Consultants (SYTECH) was dedicated to providing expert witness services in fitness-for-purpose computer disputes. By 1997, Edgar Blazier formed Ebstar Business Systems, providing turnkey computer systems and IT support to local businesses. Edgar's extensive experience in the business use of information technology, gained during his career that began at Ford Motor Company in 1959, was instrumental in establishing Ebstar as a reliable IT support provider. As the millennium approached, significant concerns arose about the Y2K bug potentially disrupting computer systems globally. Ebstar handled these challenges successfully, proving our adaptability and technical expertise.

Expansion and Innovation

In 1999, Daren Greener joined Ebstar, bringing fresh energy and innovation. His background in computer science helped Ebstar evolve. A notable early project was configuring and installing wireless networks in schools, although this project had limited potential. Shortly afterwards, we came to the attention of Professor Taylor, who was planning to retire. An arrangement was established whereby Ebstar acquired SYTECH and transitioned into the mobile phone expert witness services market, marking the beginning of our journey into digital forensics. Our ability to cast doubt on prosecution evidence earned us recognition among UK police forces, expanding our role as prosecution experts for computer and mobile phone analysis. By 2006, we focused exclusively on digital forensics expert witness services, marking a significant shift in our business strategy.

Recent Developments

The widespread use of laptops, mobile phones, and online apps has impacted our work, requiring updates to our quality systems and increasing the time needed to retrieve and analyse data. Government initiatives such as the Transforming Forensics programme, the Police Digital Service, and the Forensic Capability Network aim to address issues in forensic services. These efforts, along with the Forensic Science Regulator Act 2021, have brought about significant changes in the field. Despite these challenges, SYTECH has continually risen to the occasion, leveraging technological advancements and innovations to improve our processes and services. Our involvement in national projects and our international reach demonstrate our capability and ambition as a leading digital forensics provider.

SYTECH’s History

Our journey reflects our dedication to excellence and our ability to evolve with the times, ensuring we remain at the forefront of our industry.

SYTECH has evolved significantly since its inception, reaching numerous milestones and achieving substantial growth in the digital forensics and consultancy sector. This journey highlights our commitment to excellence, innovation, and adapting to technological advancements.

Our history spans six decades, building on lessons learned, horizon scanning, positive decision-making, and ensuring an innovative approach to maintain our position ahead of global competitors.

Major Milestones

From more recent history

In 2010, SYTECH secured a prestigious contract with West Yorkshire Police for cell site analysis, analysing mobile phone network data in serious crime investigations. This contract significantly boosted our reputation, leading to work from Greater Manchester Police and other forces. We became known for our expertise, providing guidance and expert testimony in numerous high-profile cases.

SYTECH committed to meeting these stringent requirements. We rose to the challenges by being at the forefront of pioneering techniques like chip-off forensics in the UK.

In 2015, we achieved ISO-17025 accreditation, adding to our existing ISO-9001 and ISO-27001 certifications. In 2016, we won a large framework contract, providing services to 18 police forces without the need for separate tender processes. This success necessitated a recruitment drive, additional accommodation, and enhanced equipment, leading to an extended scope of our ISO-17025 accreditation. By the end of 2016, we were working with 14 UK police forces, with accredited facilities in South Wales and Warwickshire.

The 2010s brought significant changes in forensic science

  • Government austerity measures strained budgets.
  • The Government-funded Forensic Science Service was closed, opening the market to private providers.
  • The Forensic Science Regulator set October 2017 as the deadline for digital forensic service providers (DFSPs) to achieve UKAS accreditation to ISO-17025 standards.
  • Increased focus on serious sexual offences led to a backlog of digital forensic work.
