Games consoles have evolved into multimedia centres which offer similar functionality to standard computer equipment and, in the same way that we can analyse PCs, it is possible to retrieve evidence of activity such as internet browsing and image storage from modern games consoles.
All the big names in consoles can be digitally analysed, including PS3, Xbox, Wii and so forth, and as you’ll see in our focus article, a number of cases have been successfully defended with significant digital forensic evidence from gaming consoles.
New technology such as the Microsoft Kinect and Playstation Move add camera functionality to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It’s clever stuff, but is open to abuse. These products allow users to take pictures and sometimes videos.
Forensic recovery of these images and videos can help to substantiate alibis.

Gaming consoles can therefore now provide investigators with usable forensic data – so it is crucial that the potential forensic value of gaming consoles is properly understood. They are now as sophisticated as PC’s, and we can retrieve data of equal significance, potentially with equal evidentiary value to PC’s for criminal or civil court proceedings.
